How concrete yardage conversion works
Cubic yards measure volume, not area or linear distance. This page concentrates on the conversion boundary: calculate or import volume, divide cubic feet by 27, add only the allowance selected by the user, and optionally round to a supplier increment entered on the page.

Choose the input you actually know
Dimensions mode multiplies one rectangular section and an optional identical quantity. Known-volume mode converts a completed takeoff without forcing it back through length and width fields. Do not use square feet alone unless thickness is also known.

Normalize the physical volume
Every input is converted to cubic feet at full precision. Because one cubic yard equals exactly 27 cubic feet, the unrounded yardage is cubic feet ÷ 27; metric outputs describe the same physical volume rather than a second estimate.

Apply an explicit allowance
Allowance is 0% until you change it. The calculator reports net and adjusted yardage separately, so a measurement result cannot be mistaken for an assumption about spillage, excavation, form movement, or placement conditions.

Round only to a stated supplier increment
No rounding increment is selected by default. If your supplier confirms quarter-, half-, or whole-yard ordering, choose that exact increment and the page rounds the adjusted yardage upward while retaining the calculated value for review.

Field context
Carry both calculated yardage and assumptions to the supplier
The concrete yard calculator is most useful when the result can be traced back to measured geometry or a known volume. Keep the net cubic yards, any selected allowance, and any supplier-confirmed rounding increment as three separate numbers on the order record.
A truck in the background does not establish a universal capacity, minimum, or increment. Those commercial rules vary. The calculator therefore leaves increment rounding off until the user selects one and never labels a converted quantity as a confirmed order.
Check the arithmetic
Worked example: 40 ft × 30 ft × 4 in converted to yards
Convert 4 inches to 0.333333 feet. Net volume is 40 × 30 × 0.333333 = 400 ft³. Dividing by exactly 27 produces 14.814815 yd³, displayed as 14.81 yd³, and the same volume is about 11.326739 m³.
A user-selected 5% scenario produces 15.555556 yd³. If—and only if—the supplier confirms a 0.25 yd³ increment, ceiling(15.555556 ÷ 0.25) × 0.25 produces 15.75 yd³. The 15.56 calculated yardage remains visible beside that rounded order scenario.
Use the result correctly
Conversion, allowance, and order rounding are different decisions
01 Do not convert square feet directly to yards
Area lacks thickness, so the volume is unknown. Supply a rectangular thickness in dimensions mode or import a volume produced by a separate, checkable takeoff. The page does not assume a slab depth from the project name.
02 Keep an exact calculation record
Displayed results are concise, but the formula line retains additional precision. Combine sections before final rounding where the supplier treats them as one order; rounding every small component can overstate the total.
03 Use the supplier's actual increment
Minimum loads, increments, dispatch rules, and quantity confirmation belong to the supplier. Leaving the increment blank preserves calculated yardage. Selecting an increment creates a visible scenario, not a claim about market practice.

How do I calculate cubic yards of concrete from feet and inches?
Convert thickness to feet, multiply length × width × thickness to get cubic feet, then divide by 27. For example, 54 ft³ is exactly 2 yd³ before any selected allowance.
Can I convert an existing cubic-meter result to cubic yards?
Yes. Choose Known volume, enter the value, and select m³. The calculator preserves the physical volume and reports cubic yards, cubic feet, and cubic meters without asking for dimensions again.
Does the concrete yard calculator automatically round up?
No. Calculated yardage remains unrounded except for display formatting. Optional rounding occurs only when you select a quarter-, half-, or whole-yard increment that matches a supplier requirement you have confirmed.
Is a cubic yard the same as 27 cubic feet?
Yes. NIST Handbook 44 lists 27 cubic feet as exactly one cubic yard. A cubic yard is a volume; it does not state how many square feet can be covered until thickness is known.
Should I always add an allowance to concrete yardage?
No universal percentage fits every placement. The default is 0%. Compare explicit scenarios only after considering verified dimensions, excavation, forms, placement conditions, project information, and supplier guidance.
